Montessori Prep of Lee

Pre-School

The Montessori environment for children aged 3 (or potty trained) to 6 is designed to foster holistic development and provide a nurturing and stimulating space for young learners. It is based on the educational philosophy developed by Maria Montessori, which recognizes the importance of self-directed learning and the unique needs of each child.

In the Montessori environment, there are 5 main areas of study; Sensorial, Early/Exercises of Practical Life, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Science.

The sensorial area focuses on engaging the child's senses and helping them refine their perception of the world. Through specially designed materials, children explore concepts such as size, shape, color, texture, and sound, which enhances their ability to make sense of the environment and develop their cognitive abilities.

The Early Practical Life (EPL) area in Montessori encourages children to engage in everyday activities that promote independence, order, concentration, and coordination. They learn practical skills like pouring, sweeping, buttoning, and tying shoelaces, which not only develop their fine motor skills but also instill a sense of responsibility and self-confidence. The practical life area in Montessori encompasses real-life activities that promote self-care, grace, and courtesy. Children learn how to take care of themselves and their environment, such as washing hands, setting the table, and greeting others. These activities foster independence, social skills, and a sense of responsibility.

Mathematics is a fundamental component of the Montessori curriculum. Through hands-on materials like the number rods, spindle boxes, and golden beads, children explore mathematical concepts in a concrete and tangible way. They learn to count, recognize quantities, understand place value, perform basic operations, and develop a strong foundation for abstract mathematical thinking.

In the Montessori approach, the period from 3 to 6 years of age is considered a critical time for language development in children. During this stage, children have a natural sensitivity and absorbent mind that allows them to effortlessly acquire language skills. Montessori educators create an environment that nurtures and supports this language development by employing various strategies and activities.

Science in the Montessori environment is an exploration of the natural world. Children learn about plants, animals, seasons, and basic scientific principles through hands-on experiments, observation, and exploration. They develop a curiosity for the world around them and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Overall, the Montessori environment for children aged 3 to 6 nurtures whole-child development. It recognizes the importance of addressing cognitive, social, emotional, and physical aspects of a child's growth. By providing a carefully prepared environment with developmentally appropriate materials and activities, Montessori education fosters independence, self-confidence, a love for learning, and a strong foundation for future academic success.
